Meet the Team
Johannes Thrul
Associate Professor
Johannes Thrul, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mental Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His research focuses on using digital and mobile health (mHealth) interventions to address substance use and improve mental health outcomes. He specializes in Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), behavioral intervention design, and user experience (UX) research.
Dr. Thrul earned his PhD in Psychology from Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and completed postdoctoral training in tobacco research at the University of California, San Francisco. He has led and collaborated on multiple projects utilizing smartphone-based interventions, social media-based smoking cessation programs, and real-time data collection methods to study substance use behaviors. His work includes research on tobacco, cannabis, and opioid use, as well as digital well-being interventions for young people.
He currently leads several NIH- and industry-funded projects, including a national registry on medicinal cannabis use and a digital well-being initiative for youth in Saudi Arabia. His work aims to develop evidence-based, scalable interventions that leverage technology to promote healthier behaviors.
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Faculty Profile
-
Bryant M. Stone, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow and Licensed Clinical Psychologist (MD License #07258). His research focuses on bridging the "Experience Gap"—the disconnect between individuals who use substances and the healthcare providers, professionals, and systems that serve them. To address this, he developed the Experience Integration Framework, which emphasizes amplifying patient voices in research to enhance treatment engagement and inform policy reform. Dr. Stone earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology in 2023 after completing his predoctoral internship at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Stone is a recipient of a NIDA-funded F32 postdoctoral fellowship award under the mentorship of Dr. Thrul (F32 DA061600). You can find more information on Bryant’s work here.
-
Saud Alomairah, PhD, MPH
Postdoctoral Fellow. With a background in public and digital health, his research focuses on wearable technologies and data science to enhance physical and mental well-being. Saud earned his PhD in Public Health and Epidemiology from the University of Copenhagen, where his work, nested in the FitMum Randomized Controlled Trial, examined the effects of lifestyle interventions on physical activity, sleep, and sedentary time using wearable sensors. At the Thrul Lab, Saud investigates digital media use—such as video games and social media—and its impact on youth mental, physical, and social well-being. His work leverages stakeholder engagement, literature reviews, national surveys, and intervention mapping to develop scalable, culturally tailored digital balance interventions.
-
Cerina Dubois, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow, co-mentored by Dr. Johannes Thrul and Dr. Ryan Vandrey. Her research examines the health effects of medicinal cannabis use and contributes to the development of a national data repository for cannabis and health. Dr. Dubois earned her PhD from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, where she studied the health effects of Illinois' harm reduction Opioid Alternative Pilot Program, focusing on the relationship between medical cannabis use, opioid reduction, pain management, and quality of life. She previously worked at the University of Alberta, analyzing data from Canada’s largest epidemiological cohort of medical cannabis users. Her current work explores how specific cannabis products impact chronic pain, opioid use, and mental health outcomes.
-
Jasmin Han, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow. With a background in health geography, her research applies spatial modeling and visualization techniques to address health disparities and enhance healthcare access through technology. Dr. Han earned her PhD in Geographic Information Science and Cartography from the University of Utah, focusing on emergency care access. She specializes in trajectory analysis and mobile health solutions for substance use disorders (SUDs). Her current work examines spatiotemporal patterns of tobacco and cannabis dual use and develops location-based interventions for smoking cessation.
-
Joseph Waring, MPH
PhD Student. His research focuses on developing smartphone-based just-in-time adaptive interventions to promote health-related behaviors, such as smoking and drug use, by examining behavior-environment interactions that support sustained behavior change. In 2024, Joseph received the Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health’s Global Health Established Field Placement award, enabling him to contribute to an NIH-funded study in South Africa optimizing a smoking cessation treatment package for people with HIV. He holds an MPH from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky.
-
Daniel J. Joo, PhD candidate
Visiting Scholar. Daniel is a doctoral candidate at the Samsung Advanced Institute for Health Sciences & Technology, specializing in digital health. His research focuses on digital healthcare, including Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), mHealth interventions, and AI-driven solutions. Before academia, Daniel was an entrepreneur and product owner, co-founding 8Cups Inc., a digital health startup backed by multiple South Korean venture capitalists and an alumnus of the Samsung Electronics C-Lab accelerator program. He has also served as a lecturer at Mzumbe University in Tanzania.
-
Janardan Devkota, MS, MPH, MDS
Research Associate. His research focuses on developing and evaluating digital interventions to prevent and treat substance use disorders among adolescents and young adults, with a particular emphasis on opioids, cannabis, and tobacco cessation. At the Thrul Lab, Janardan contributes to mHealth, social media, and smartphone-based research on substance use. He specializes in advanced statistical analyses, including intensive longitudinal studies, ecological momentary assessment (EMA), and micro-randomized trials. His work informs data-driven solutions to improve prevention and intervention strategies, particularly in addressing the opioid crisis and mental health challenges among vulnerable populations.
-
Dahlia AlJuboori, MBChB, MHS
Senior Research Assistant. Her research focuses on digital well-being, prevention, and implementation science, particularly in school-based interventions, substance use, and the mental health impact of digital media. She holds an MHS from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and an MBChB from the University of Baghdad, where she practiced as a general physician before transitioning to public health research. She manages the Digital Well-being in Saudi Arabia project and plays a key role in study design, intervention development, and data management. Her work also includes leading systematic reviews, conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses, and overseeing large-scale research projects. She is passionate about mental health, reducing health disparities, implementing evidence-based interventions, and leveraging digital tools to improve mental health outcomes.
-
Clarissa Madar, BA
Research Assistant. She contributes to the Cannabis and Health Research Initiative, focusing on study programming and participant outreach. Clarissa earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Reed College in 2023. Her research interests include social connection, general health, and well-being.
